10-Mar-2018

The Noosa Festival of Surfing is one of the biggest events on the Noosa Festival calendar, and has become just as infamous for its unique surfing events, as well as for its impressive amateur events. The event is celebrating its 27th year in 2018 and is now one of the largest surf festivals in the world in regards to competitor numbers, with more than 900 entries from 20 regions in 2017. Spread out over a week from March 10 to 17, the festival features more than just surfing with workshops, classes, markets, entertainment and the world’s best surf party boasting free movies and live bands plus cold beer and wine at the festival village.

Our favourite surfing event, which is celebrating its seventh year, is the Surfing Dog Championships. This event attracts thousands to the sands of Main Beach, excited to witness the water-loving pooches cruise along the waves with board under paw. What started out as a workshop on Noosa Dog Beach quickly become one of the biggest drawcards of the festival as as competitor and spectator numbers grew. There is a free workshop for your pup to learn the basics on how to tandem with you on a stand-up paddle board with expert SUP rider and dog whisperer Chris DeAboitiz. Later that afternoon at First Point, the main doggie event takes place! Eight pups and their owners take to the water in the hope of becoming the 2018 Surfing Dog Champion.

Other surf-inspired events held over the week include a Gala Dinner with Nev Hyman, Unity water Sustainability Day, She to Sea: All Female Exhibition of Surf-Inspired Art, as well as daily beach yoga classes and Handplanes Sunrise Sessions. The evening entertainment is another drawcard to the event with live music from bands such as Gold Member, China Beach, Coastbusters, The Dreggs, Sal Wonder, Dosed, The Myths, The Swamps, Sunrose, Old Man Friday, and Los Laws.

Held at Noosa Main Beach, the event is one of our favourites – with all the action just metres from our doorstep. What’s more, admission to watch the events is free!
